TV: The impact of new digital media on television:

1) What does the 'industry' concept in A Level Media Studies refer to?

Industry refers to the companies that create and distribute texts of standard and regulatory legal framework that media companies operate.

2) What does David Hesmondhalgh argue with regards to how the creative industries media production have changed since the 1980s?

There has been increase in companies owning different companies in various sectors of the industry and have moved to economic action and deregulation has reduced the public ownership. Also means that niche audiences are easily targeted.

3) Choose the three most significant points Hesmondhalgh makes regarding the changing cultural industries. Why are these the most significant in your view?

They most significant points are that digitisation which has allowed the technology company to compete with traditional media companies and deregulation which has reduced public ownership and these are significant because because they have created this change within the industry rapidly. This means this has created more synergy and economic benefits within the media.

4) What is technological convergence?

This is the fact that technology has changed and created more of a different lifestyle that now people have accustomed to in the media as it is presented in new forms.

5) How are technology companies challenging traditional broadcasters in the TV industry?

Now traditional broadcasters in the TV industry are challenged by technology companies as now companies have started producing their own television programmes for example like Amazon and Netflix and then set up their internet distribution networks and don't have to pay additional for the distribution.

6) What budgets will Netflix, Amazon and Apple spend on original programming next year?

Netflix will spend 8 billion on original material and Amazons budget is estimated at 4.5 billion and apple with 1 billion.

7) How many countries are Netflix and Amazon available in?

Netflix is available in 190 countries and amazon is opened in 200.

8) The global nature of modern television means producers are having to consider international audiences when creating content. What example from Netflix does the article use to explain this?
The article gives example of Hollywood and is changing for worldwide distribution of films and  in Netflix the show stranger things and named a character 'Demogorgan' after a dungeons and dragon demon prince so that connection can stay between different cultures.

9) Do you think technology companies such as Google, Facebook and Amazon will increase their interest in the television industry?
I think that technology companies will increase their interest in the TV industry because the shows can get hosted very rapidly and increases interest for the audiences as they can get notified or have it available in their feed in front of their eyes whilst on social media. This encourages people to watch all sorts of shows and TV Dramas.

10) How do changes in technology influence the creation of TV dramas such as Capital or Deutschland 83? How?

Influence of technology is significant for Dramas like capital and Deutschland because everyone in the audience now have their own opinions and can say something if they wish about these shows and as capital is state of the nation it is quite important of what people think about it just as for Deutschland 83 and the internet may influence these Dramas because the whole world has access to it.
