TV: Deutschland 83 close- textual analysis:

Scene 1: G arden/BBQ scenes (East & West Germany): Technical codes – particularly mise-en-scene: Lighting is changed significantly as it is lower in the east than the west. East is represented more bleak than the west. The noise in the background in the east whilst the party is going on is higher than in the west it seem quite luxurious and posh and more sincere. Costumes in the east are more casual than in the west. Representation of East & West Germany / Family / Gender: There is different representation of gender as Yvonne is spoken for within the west side of Germany emphasises the traditional aspect of gender identity. There is a sense of community and togetherness in east rather than the west.   The camera moves around Martin in the west, which emphasises that he is in 'danger' as he is surrounded by his 'enemies'. East- reinforces stereotype of working class people- they know how to have fun. West- more formal-issues/separate. Scene

Deutschland 83: case study blog tasks

Reviews and features: 1) What positive aspects of  Deutschland 83  are highlighted in the reviews? The positive aspects that are highlighted are the scene where Martin is running running around in the supermarket gives audiences these visions were constructed and links in capitalistic values and nostalgia. The fact that there is a subtle difference that is made between the east and west side of Germany alludes to the differences allowing audiences to get better representations and gives a good portrayal of the historical period. 2) What criticisms are made of the show? The criticisms  made of this show is that even though it provides us with nostalgia there is a lack of drama within the show and offers stereotypes of stasi officers who make fake reports and blackmail which is a negative representation as some audiences may perceive . 3) Why did the Telegraph suggest that  Deutschland 83  did the 'period' aspect of 'period drama' so well? This is because  it gives

Applying Marxism: Blog task

1) Marxism suggests that power in society is controlled through social control because there are two types of structures that support this as there is the repressive structure which is living through the rules and threat or the ideological structure which is the values and beliefs that are transmitted in society which is supported by the capitalist system. This theory further states that there are ideologies and powers that are set in society so that they can support the power base. 2) The Apprentice is a good example of the media reinforcing capitalist values and ideologies as it shows sugar having all the power and reinforces the superior position that the elite have to create this wealth that he has and this provides everything he needs for survival. 3) Three Medias that Fetishise the working class: Only fools and horses (1981-2003) This represents the working classes positively as they are shown as overcoming their struggles. Shameless this represents working class and midd

Marxism and Hegemony: Blog tasks:

1)The article suggests that capital features left wing ideology because it describes capital being a show that has a social equality as there are different classes represented and different ethnic cultures in London on one road. 2) Three quotes from the article that are critical of capital: ''It wasn't that plot that attracted the BBC drama in the first place'' ''That concept went no where'' ''The last 20 mins contained no plot'' These quotes all go against capital's story line as it did seem as if it was going no where at times but this article is very critical as some parts are bought upon the audience but we just don't really know why like the postcards and what is it exactly. 3) The scenes that could be promoting left wing ideology is the idea of the immigrant Quentina who has come to London to earn money and work hard but she does get caught and put in a detention centre. Also the idea that the she is challe

TV: Capital representation question:

“Capital is not a crime drama but a family drama.” To what extent do representations of family in Capital support this view?  [25 marks] I agree to a significant extent that Capital is a family drama than  crime drama due to specific aspects of the show. One reason why capital is not a crime drama but a family drama is because it is shot in a diverse area of London which conveys contrasts between different ethnicity's within families. For example, when the show is introduced within the opening scene there are already many stereotypical notions that are displayed, as we see the husband being described by the old widow saying 'he didn't much like change' which highlights the fact that her husband was traditional did not like the mix up of different Ethnic minorities. There is further reinforcement of ideologies that are demonstrated through the families as the Asian family is shown as having this cultural togetherness as we see them dining on the table together as
