Marxism and Hegemony: Blog tasks:

1)The article suggests that capital features left wing ideology because it describes capital being a show that has a social equality as there are different classes represented and different ethnic cultures in London on one road.

2) Three quotes from the article that are critical of capital:

  • ''It wasn't that plot that attracted the BBC drama in the first place''
  • ''That concept went no where''
  • ''The last 20 mins contained no plot''
These quotes all go against capital's story line as it did seem as if it was going no where at times but this article is very critical as some parts are bought upon the audience but we just don't really know why like the postcards and what is it exactly.

3) The scenes that could be promoting left wing ideology is the idea of the immigrant Quentina who has come to London to earn money and work hard but she does get caught and put in a detention centre. Also the idea that the she is challenging the authority by having a lawyer and portraying very defending behaviours.

4)Capital reinforces the status quo in Capitalist London by portraying the idea that if you work hard you will achieve we see this when the Banker works on his laptop continuously for the money and so does Quentina when comes and claims for her money she says that she has worked overtime which highlights this idea that they are gaining something after putting in all this effort which signifies to the audience that this is how London works through this capitalist ideology.
This promotes hegemonic ideology as there are different classes portrayed and the notion that they are socialised to internalise these norms so they can achieve a living out of this.

Media magazine feature on BBC drama the casual vacancy and ideology:

1) The daily mail suggested that the casual vacancy promoted the left wing ideology because in the drama it describes how the elite sell of their food banks and rehab centre the sweet love house because they do very little to actually help.

2)The article suggests that the characters, narrative and setting are used to promote left wing ideology because certain characters are seen to be giving their own political opinion within what is happening as Barry fair brother goes against some things that are happening and claims this should not happen who gets frustrated on certain things.

3) Gramsci's theory of hegemony suggests people are kept under control through active consent- the control of 'common sense'. How could you apply the Daily mail or the BBC to the idea of hegemony and dominant ideologies in the UK media?

The daily mail and the BBC link to the dominant ideologies because the daily mail supports more right wing ideologies to do with the elite and the conservative party and take the approach that if you work hard you will achieve. Also the idea that the daily mail put across is that they against the left wing approaches by presenting us stories that conflict the idea of community and this changes the way people perceive things. However it can also be argued that the BBC is impartial in the way things are presented as they may convey a notably civilised impression in the media by presenting news that is international and there is presentation of minority social groups but there is also a limit of critical discussions against some matters in the media.

sound analysis: Blog task

Funny Games: 1) The music suggests that the family is quite high class and formal because they are listening to classical music and playing games. 2) The use of music is diagetic and parallel as it goes with the sort of family they are. 3)I think that the narrative will develop as there might be some sort of danger when they reach their destination as the music played towards the ending of the scene seems quite serious. A Clockwork orange: 1)This scene uses classical music which doesn't go with the scene as it is non diagetic and contrapuntal as we are unable to associate it with the scene. 2)The action in this scene is slow so it could be adding to the tension of this particular scene. Time in the west: 1)The sounds within this scene were footsteps, water, fingers clicking, the fly buzzing and the train. 2)The sound bridge was the train as we heard it before we actually saw it which creates a tense atmosphere as we don't know what is going to happen next. Once upo...
