Applying Marxism: Blog task

1) Marxism suggests that power in society is controlled through social control because there are two types of structures that support this as there is the repressive structure which is living through the rules and threat or the ideological structure which is the values and beliefs that are transmitted in society which is supported by the capitalist system. This theory further states that there are ideologies and powers that are set in society so that they can support the power base.

2) The Apprentice is a good example of the media reinforcing capitalist values and ideologies as it shows sugar having all the power and reinforces the superior position that the elite have to create this wealth that he has and this provides everything he needs for survival.

3) Three Medias that Fetishise the working class:

  • Only fools and horses (1981-2003) This represents the working classes positively as they are shown as overcoming their struggles.
  • Shameless this represents working class and middle class in a amusing way as certain things are overcome in different ways.
  • The wire also presents differences in the middle class and working class by conveying the lifestyles and intrigues audiences through the law and crimes.

  • Show the values of the power elite as beneficial to the mass:
In capital the white middle class family are represented as having the power which is beneficial to them as if anything goes wrong they are able to just move out and this is not possible for other characters.
  • show queries or challenges to the base as meaningless, foolish or anti social via 'failed revolt'
There are challenges that are conveyed towards the base because of the Zimbabwean women who is educated PHD level and she goes against her being sent back to her country as she believes that she has the right to stay as she is working hard and earning for her living but then she is kept in a detention centre.
  • shows the value of the power elite as being 'for the good of the masses' 
There is power of the elite in capital shown as being good for the masses through the police and law system as they show the people living on the street that they are working on the case for the postcards but things are not actually right. There is a system that is put across to boost morale of the community.

1) This article is about how the film a field in England was released, distributed and funded.
