TV: Capital representation question:

“Capital is not a crime drama but a family drama.” To what extent do representations of family in Capital support this view? [25 marks]

I agree to a significant extent that Capital is a family drama than  crime drama due to specific aspects of the show.

One reason why capital is not a crime drama but a family drama is because it is shot in a diverse area of London which conveys contrasts between different ethnicity's within families. For example, when the show is introduced within the opening scene there are already many stereotypical notions that are displayed, as we see the husband being described by the old widow saying 'he didn't much like change' which highlights the fact that her husband was traditional did not like the mix up of different Ethnic minorities. There is further reinforcement of ideologies that are demonstrated through the families as the Asian family is shown as having this cultural togetherness as we see them dining on the table together as a family but we never see the white British family do this. The problems that are exhibited in both families are seen to be quite realistic of finance and family morals within the Asian family and this helps exemplify Capital as a family drama.

Another reason why Capital can be seen as a family drama is because capital looks at representations of community and what it means to belong to that community disregarding your background. This is shown through the portrayal of Pepys road and many people are struggling during this financial crisis in Britain as a whole. This is communicated to us through the differences shown amongst  males and females as males are shown as more dominant and the breadwinners for the household and women are presented as more vulnerable which could give a manifestation of nuclear family ideals.
In addition to this there is a sense of British humour within the Asian family that is presented whilst there is arguments of specific behaviour in the household but there is a under representation that is demonstrated as the white middle class are shown as a nuclear family with upper middle class ideals as we see this revealed through the value they give to money which is very less.

On the other hand it can be argued that Capital is a crime drama to some extent as some conventions of crime are displayed within the show. This could be presented through the setting which is London is a well known place where crime happens and within the show we see extremist values that are signified to the audiences. The case that gets Shahid involved gives audiences a representation of cyber crime and this gets solved over time but the family also give support so this again gives impression of warmth and comfort that the family gives during a hard time.

In conclusion, capital is not a crime drama but a family drama due to the aspects shown within the families as certain values are juxtaposed. There is further representation of certain  family aspect because of the stereotypical aspects shown which make it a family drama rather than a crime drama.

sound analysis: Blog task

Funny Games: 1) The music suggests that the family is quite high class and formal because they are listening to classical music and playing games. 2) The use of music is diagetic and parallel as it goes with the sort of family they are. 3)I think that the narrative will develop as there might be some sort of danger when they reach their destination as the music played towards the ending of the scene seems quite serious. A Clockwork orange: 1)This scene uses classical music which doesn't go with the scene as it is non diagetic and contrapuntal as we are unable to associate it with the scene. 2)The action in this scene is slow so it could be adding to the tension of this particular scene. Time in the west: 1)The sounds within this scene were footsteps, water, fingers clicking, the fly buzzing and the train. 2)The sound bridge was the train as we heard it before we actually saw it which creates a tense atmosphere as we don't know what is going to happen next. Once upo...
