Film & TV assessment learner response:

1) Feedback:

  • WWW- clearly revised the Films and TV texts which is very positive. 
  • EBI- Revise postmodern terms!
  • Revise marxism and hegemony as this is was one of the weakest aspects of Q3
  • work on exam techniques like structuring paragraphs and topic sentences.

1) Analyse figure one using the following post modern ideas:

  • blurred in the sense of the film genres which mean that its a contemporary media landscape and sequels and parodies offer inter textual references and audience pleasures that link to steave Neale's theory of repetition and difference.
  • genres are experimented with to establish new conventions.

2) How effective was the distribution and promotion of chicken?
  • chicken struggling to be funded as in global market because it is dominated by media conglomerates.
  • took two years from the film being made in 2014.
  • social media 
  • the posters being promoted were effective in communicating genre.
3) To what extent do the representations in your selected TV drama Close-Study Products reflect the social and cultural context in which they were produced?
  • how media representations convey values, attitudes and beliefs about the world and how these may be systematically reinforced across a wide range of media representations (e.g. Marxism and hegemony)
  • Television dramas can only ever reflect, rather than influence, the social and cultural contexts of production

3) The first question demanded a response using postmodern terminology. Write a definition here of the three main terms:

Bricolage:

Juxtaposition between old and new texts to create new meanings.

Pastiche:
This refers to media products that imitate the style of another text, artist or time period. Pastiche is an example of intertextuality and takes a positive view of the original source

Intertextuality:
when one media text references another media text – through genre, conventions, mise-en-scene or specific cultural references

4) Two points i could have added for the distribution and promotion of chicken was:

  • Promotion of Chicken was through a combination of traditional marketing methods (trailer, film poster with review quotes, interviews and reviews such as Mark Kermode’s review on the BBC) and new/digital media.
  • Small cinema release in Arthouse cinemas appropriate distribution for the film – a British social realist drama. Similarly, Film4 was a good home for TV premiere in April 2017. It was also selected for the curated film subscription service MUBI aimed at more discerning, educated film fans.

Introduction: Representation- being represented through the cultural and historical context such as wealth, class, gender and migration.

first paragraph:
  • The class divide in capital being represented through the use of different families for example the British banker roger and the Asian family.
  • This could allude to the idea of Marxism and Hegemony as capital provides the status quo of working hard and achieving as for example when the Banker works on his laptop continuously for the money and so does Quentina when comes and claims for her money she says that she has worked overtime which highlights this idea that they are gaining something after putting in all this effort which signifies to the audience that this is how London works through this capitalist ideology. 
  • This subtly reinforces the capitalist ideology as there is explicit reference to recent events in social context like terrorism, debates about migration and London house price inflation.
  • Could represent the wealthy as negatively and positive representation of multiculturalism and illegal immigrants.
second paragraph:
  • Deutschland 83 signifies different values of east and west which provides audiences with differences there were during that time which gives them a sense of nostalgia.
  • Binary oppositions that signify values this could indicate the idea of capitalism again as the west have more luxuries than people in the east like when we see the supermarket that is fully stocked reflects dominant ideologies of there being a sense of power in the west.
  • This could also reinforce exaggerated pop culture through the mise en scene with the use of bright colours and construction of certain things which demonstrate the social and cultural context and also provide us with nostalgia from the 1980's
  • The historical context is reflected through the cold war and how politics was being dealt with during this time which reinforces dominant ideology and perceptions of reality as a result.
conclusion:

  • Television drama draws on a long and enduring tradition of narrative and genre conventions; therefore drama itself as a form is much more significant than the social and cultural contexts of any individual production.
  • Television dramas can only ever reflect, rather than influence, the social and cultural contexts of production

A field in england: case study

1) This article is about how the film a field in England was released, distributed and funded. The article states that this was complex as it was not easy to shoot at one location and used film 4 and 4DVD to fund this film which was a BFI distribution fund made at £300K and each area that was used was designed to add value to the film and give it a source of identity.The article states that this film was made by a diverse strategy making it more liable to be more original and less dominated by other technologies. 2)Industrial Evolution:Producer Andy Starke on the music industry influences informing A field in England's release strategy.
