Film poster and Pre production:

Film poster conventions

Do some generic research on film posters.
1) List the key conventions of a film poster.

  • captivating to the audience
  • must have a focal picture
  • The title must be eye-catching
  • Clearly defines film genre
  • Information of director and production country should be provided.
  • Reviews or titles of other films that company has made

2) What makes a film poster instantly recognisable?

  • The image along with the title
  • tagline

3) What are regarded as some of the best film posters of all time? Why?

The best film posters convey the genre and run along the narrative of the film so they will essentially, go and watch the trailer. The posters also tend to attract audiences through the tagline and title of the film.

4) Look back at your statement of intent. What are you planning to produce in terms of your film posters?

Can you take inspiration from your research above?

Film poster research - genre
Go back to the five-film trailers you researched in your chosen genre (and additional films if you wish). For each film, find at least three different film posters for the film and analyse the following:

The Conjuring 2:
The conventions of the poster are similar to the film as it gives enigma to audiences as they are set with an image with an unknown figure at the door very suspenseful feel. All the posters are different for example of the posters is a hand gripped over the lady with the Christian cross and chains on the hand. Audiences are able to know instantly there is symbolism to do with the crucifixion of Jesus. I can use how the characters are made to look vulnerable in natural settings when I construct my poster.

A Quiet Place:
This film poster is very suspenseful and dramatically intense as the characters are made to look vulnerable once again. This poster uses an intriguing tagline to go with the title of the film "if they hear you they hunt you". This appeals to audiences as it constructs the film narrative to be full of enigma. Each poster is made different to target different audiences, in this case, I believe it is for females and fans of horror in general as the protagonist is shown to be a vulnerable female. From this poster, I can use the way the construction of the tagline is implemented to audiences to provide them with a reoccurring motif within the trailer.

Truth or Dare:

The conventions on the poster are that it is captivating to audiences as it builds this enigma for them because of the question mark portrayed on the protagonists face. The differences between this poster and other posters are that it includes more characters all looking as if they have been kidnapped. I believe that the target audience for each poster is males and females as the second poster has more of a mixed gender rather than a female looking bewildered. I may construct other characters in my film poster to get a wider audience involved.

It:

This film poster also has similar conventions to the film trailer as it is providing audiences with enigma. The poster is constructed with a balloon and hand reaching out and a boy with its back to the audience in a yellow coat and the rest of the background is just black. This illustrates something will
happen to this boy and how he may also be kidnapped or taken. This is very suspenseful as audiences would want to know what is going to happen. This poster is different from where the clown is shown and the boy is standing there looking vulnerable. I believe that both these posters just appeal to fans of the genre as they are filled with high amounts of suspense. I believe that using different styles and ways of communicating messages is done through the way the characters are presented, which enhances the level of interaction between the audience and film posters and i will do that for my posters as a result.

Planning and sketching
1) Create a spider diagram or bullet point list of everything you plan to include in your film posters AND all the ways you could target the three target audience segments outlined in the brief: fans of the genre, males, females. Make sure you also create a local film festival in order to meet this aspect of the brief.

  • I would use the fright fest film festival in Glasgow.
  • Fans of genre I would make poster have many horror conventions with much more enigma and suspense.
  • To target males I would have all the characters within my posters so that i can target males within the audience.
  • I would make females look empowered as well as vulnerable in one of my posters to target a female audience.

2) Produce an A4 sketch for your first film poster, adding significant detail in terms of text and planned images (you don't need to draw the image if you don't want to - but must offer a detailed text-based description if not). Clearly label which segment of the target audience you are aiming for with this poster and where the poster will be displayed (outside location, magazine or newspaper etc.) Remember that each poster can either be landscape or portrait and also needs to link to the local film festival that will be screening the film (see details in brief above). When you have sketched the poster, scan or photograph it and add it to your blog-post.

3) Produce an A4 sketch for your second film poster, clearly identifying the segment of the target audience this poster will be aiming at. Pay particular attention to details you will either keep consistent (to create a brand identity and cover the local film festival aspect) or change (to alter the target audience). When you have sketched the poster, scan or photograph it and add it to your blog post.

4) Produce an A4 sketch for your third film poster, clearly identifying the segment of the target audience this poster will be aiming at. Pay particular attention to details you will either keep consistent (to create a brand identity and cover the local film festival aspect) or change (to alter the target audience). When you have sketched the poster, scan or photograph it and add it to your blog post.

Photoshoot planning
1) Which of your characters will appear on each poster? If the characters will be the same on each poster, how will you differentiate the images?
One of my characters will appear to be on two of my posters and the images will be different as the setting will change.

2) What images do you need for each film poster? Write a detailed description.
I need my female character in two settings one will be with a mirror and the other either opening a door and looking vulnerable or either standing up to whatever is seen. This will portray as being a dominant female character rather than vulnerable but will decide this during the shoot. I will have the couple portrayed as like a shadow in the window disfigured in one of the other posters.

3) Write a shot list for the photo shoot(s). Make sure you plan a variety of camera shots you will look to capture (medium shots, close-ups etc.) to give yourself flexibility when designing the posters in Photoshop later. Will the photo shoot be out on location or in school with the white backdrop and lighting?

4) What costume, props or make-up will you require for the photoshoot(s)?
I will just be needing different amounts of light and will be done indoors.
