Moonlight trip homework

Discussion points :

Chiron is presented in a reluctant way to tell the audience he is a character who is having a hard time and finds it hard to open up because of what is going on with his family this makes the audience want to identify with his character. Furthermore his character is presented in three stages of his life showing how he has coped with everything and the other characters help Chiron by talking to him slowly with very small amounts of speech used but we also later realise that him as black he has later identified with Juan and later recreates his character. He doesn't make eye contact because he is conveyed through his vulnerable and shy character so the audience feels sympathetic towards him.
  • The image created via the setting is very saturated and this makes the image of the city look more intriguing towards the audience as the audience wouldn't expect this type of film to be set in Miami. Also the culture promotes diversity and the reality of what kind of things can happen even in cities like these.
  • Throughout this film Juan is a significant character as Chiron ends up identifying with him as we see his character in the third part he has built body and still sensitive just like Juan this makes the audience realise that he has internalised aspects of his psyche as in the end he is able to be open with Kevin.
  • The film makers may purposely make this film centred around the beach because is conveys the suppressed frequency of isolation and loneliness, done by the forces of nature yet caused by man and it helps us to know how much pressure Chiron feels throughout the movie as he uses that place to come to normally when he is feeling low.
  • The various nicknames were significant because they helped contribute to his character in the end because he was able to identify who he actually is and this  makes us realise this film is about his identity. The final chapter made the audience realise that he was able to identify his character through the phases of his life via Kevin and Juan as these characters have a huge influence on him as in the end Kevin repeatedly asks him who are you and he seems vulnerable and tormented but is able to open up and this leads Kevin being a open door towards Chiron.
Review:

This film is quite violent and about the development of Gay identity and show the 3 phases of life that Chiron goes through and was very realistic as each of the characterisations were quite problematic. This film is great as it deals with the universal themes by directly dealing with  particular culture this makes the audience motivated in terms of opening up about identity and doesn't just make you acknowledge it. Also this film had made the character of Chiron quite and unprotected because of what he was going through which helped build the bases of this film. The best thing was the motif of the nicknames which helps him overcome his vulnerable side and open as Juan also tells him a story about him being nicknamed blue and tells him no one can choose your name only you and this theme about identity is persistent throughout the film and i would rate this film 4/5.

Extension:

Chiron has quite a massive future ahead as he has the ability to turn around everything in the past to make it better as now he has realised his identity and knows his sexuality he could simply move on and leave Kevin because this was create further problems for him. Chiron could simple start fresh like he already has and create a better future for himself just like Kevin has. This could change him as a character as he would be able to feel more open to others and confident with himself towards other which would make him able to build further relationships.
