Mise en scene video comparison

The Boy

In this scene from the movie The boy we are shown elements of horror, thriller and action which create the mood of this particular scene.
There are elements of Mise en scene within this scene for example the lighting in this scene key as it is mainly dim and dark which adds to the mysterious atmosphere and adds to the sinister scene. Firstly we are bought to this scene with a argument over this surreptitious doll and the movement of the characters are bringing in more tension around this doll as there pace picks up and the character in this scene snatches the doll however before this bit we are taken in a flash of a shot to another character close up sitting in the car which awakens by the quarrel between these two characters inside this could be deliberate movement of the characters to imply that there is tension in this scene so that audience can feel empathy with these characters as the doll is smashed and there is a big shock and close ups within these characters so that we can feel their emotions. Furthermore the costume are used for the  doll and when the boy comes out the wall this could be a signifier for this scene as it is mainly focused on this particular object and then it coming alive creates a eerie atmosphere within this scene. As the boy comes out of the wall there is sound which defines the actions of these characters as the lights begins to flicker and gradually the sound picks up and then the characters hand is centralised which adds to the appearance of this character and the fact that this is set in house room makes it seem more unintentional and unexpected. in addition to this the make up of the boy within this scene is very significant as the  boy looks more horrific and catches the eye the audience.

The Dressmaker

This film the dressmaker uses a certain time era and locations to show setting of this film. As within this film we see many forms of costume, lighting movement of the actors and locations which add to the Mise en scene within the trailer of the dress maker. Within this trailer the first scene is the locations that the film uses a deserted town and an old bus which adds to the time period  as the colours are less vibrant and warm they add to the deserted look that this trailer is trying to bring out and the old car also tells us that this is a remote area . Furthermore when the characters are are shown to us they don't seem to look that happy and their costume resembles each other as all the characters are wearing shades that go against the Protagonist within this scene of the film  so this may have a significant impact of the mood on the audience. In addition to this the scenes have a mix of high and low lighting as sometimes the protagonist seems to blend in with everyone and sometimes she doesn't and the colour schemes appear in opposite tones and shades and at the end of the trailer the character seems to blend in well with this trailer as her make up is much more vibrant and there is a variety of elements of Mise en scene within this trailer as the director has made sure everything that the audience watches should have a purpose.

Legion movie clip

As this scene begins the lighting is dim and dark suggesting that the scene is quite serious and could have elements of mystery linked within it and the fact that we have been given a birds eye view of the place and there people crowded around it but we are not shown much close up of them and there is a type of hut in the centre. This film is a sci fi related so it is filled with action and thriller. Furthermore when we are introduced to the characters they seem very serious and overwhelmed which could be centralising them to the audience so that we are interesting and feel sympathy for them. We see the male as the dominant character and the female helpless no matter what she tries to do and the slow movement of the characters effect the mood of the audience as them moving slowly creates a sense of mystery but the lighting remains the same and so does the location which shows that it is trying to create more of a mystery for the audience as the lighting remains that way. However the pace of this scene picks up and then there is more action within the scene as more voices are used in the scene the characters add up and the action begins as the main protagonist in this scene is the baby and it is centralising and the lighting also shifts giving more brightness on their faces giving more close up and setting keeps shifting to interior to exterior to keep the tension moving. Furthermore the lighting becomes even stronger when the character come out of the door making him see more dominant than the other characters as he has wings and a different costume than the others which suggests he has more authority and the action within this scene builds up and as he stabs the other character the tension shifts and its becomes all quite and movement begins again as all the characters shift outside and it is all sinister and dark which could be a purposeful intention of the director to intrigue the audience.

All these scenes and trailers have different elements of mise en scene for example the first two are very different as the scene from the Boy is more to do with horror and thriller whereas the second one the dressmaker is a drama and more of comedy as certain locations are used to make it a certain time era whereas the other one seems more modern and has elements of horror to build up tension and doesn't really use many vibrant colours as the dressmaker does to make the protagonist stand out the dressmaker trailer makes all the characters have costumes that are opposite to her which lets the audience know there is something is being held against her. Furthermore for the third scene the Legion we are shown a different aspect through lighting and we know it is a science fiction related film as the characters use action and i could be linked to psychological horror as the characters appear very shocked and disturbed through out this scene similar to the first scene The Boy which also has elements of horror and fantasy and the lighting is very dim so the elements of mise en scene in these trailers and scenes are very different as they all are portraying different genres.
